Trial delayed for former officer charged with burglary, arson

FOREST CITY, Iowa —A January date has been set for another trial of a former Forest City police officer charged with burglary and arson.
In May the Iowa Court of Appeals ordered a new trial for 37-year-old Thaddeus Ellenbecker. The Appeals Court said officers failed to read Ellenbecker his Miranda rights.
Court records say Ellenbecker's new trial had been scheduled for Oct. 29 and then Dec. 10. Now it's set to begin on Jan. 21.
Ellenbecker was convicted in 2012 of arson and burglary. He is accused of setting a fire that damaged the Forest City police station in October 2011. Authorities say he stole an assault rifle from a squad car in November 2010.
Ellenbecker was shot during a scuffle with a state agent investigating the crimes.
