Former Wyoming cop sentenced on child sex charges

By Bob Kalinowski, Staff Writer

Former Wyoming police Officer Cody Smith used to put people in jail. Now he's in prison on child sex charges.

When Smith arrived in court Thursday for sentencing, he already knew his sentence — two to four years in state prison, a punishment negotiated between he and prosecutors.

Luzerne County Judge Tina Polachek Gartley order him directly to prison, telling him he should be ashamed of his conduct as a police officer. Smith apologized for his behavior.

Smith, 21, pleaded guilty in March and agreed to serve two to four years in state prison, followed by five years probation. He pleaded guilty to four separate criminal cases, including two counts of statutory sexual assault and one count each of unlawful contact with a minor and corruption of minors.

Smith was accused of having sex with four teenage girls.

Gartley ordered Smith to register with the state police's Megan's Law for 25 years and enroll in a sexual offenders treatment program.

He is to have no contact with the victims and no unsupervised contact with minors, Gartley ruled.
