Des Moines cop faces federal charge in assault

DES MOINES (AP) — A former Des Moines police officer is in federal custody on a charge of assaulting a man during an arrest in February.
Federal prosecutors said Colin Boone was indicted Tuesday and arrested in South Dakota on Thursday morning.
The formal charge is deprivation of rights under color of law, which is a violation of the constitutional rights citizens have against unreasonable force by police.
A grand jury indictment document alleges Boone kicked a man causing an injury in February. The charge carries a prison sentence of up to 10 years.

U.S. Attorney Nicholas Klinefeldt said in a statement the arrest is the result of an FBI investigation.
