cop gets probation for tax fraud
By Rich Calder
A former cop busted by IRS
agents moonlighting on the job as a tax preparer was sentenced Tuesday to five
years probation.
Jonathan Wally, 34, of the
Bronx had copped a plea in August to tax fraud and identity theft offenses
related to filing fraudulent returns for customers.
Manhattan federal Judge Lorna
Schofield’s ruling includes six months of weekly imprisonment at a facility in
the metropolitan area for 24 consecutive hours if the defendant is working 40
or more hours per week, or 48 consecutive hours per week if he is working 39 or
fewer hours per week.
Prosecutors say Wally – who was
a 10-year NYPD veteran assigned to the 34th Precinct in Washington Heights
before being busted — illegally utilized Social Security numbers issued to
dozens of unwitting children in order to submit tax returns for clients and
then falsely claimed they had dependents and should receive tax credits.
