Two Seattle WA police officers are accused of using excessive force by a reporter who claims she witnessed the officers chase down a man who appeared to be in his 50′s for jaywalking and tackled him from behind, causing his head to bounce off the pavement. She then claims that one of the officers repeatedly punched him in the face. This would be the latest in a long string of excessive force complaints associated with jaywalking arrests in Seattle.


A Baltimore MD police officer currently charged with murder is the subject of a lawsuit alleging that he shouldn’t have even been a police officer at the time he fatally shot an unarmed man during a dispute while he was drunk because he had been in a similar shooting incident previously.

ttsburgh PA has settled a lawsuit for $40,000 to a man who was shot in the hand by an off-duty officer who was under the influence when he mistook that man for being one of a group of people he alleges punched him in the face while he was driving. Apparently the officer pistol whipped him in the head and when the man put his hand up to block the blows the officer shot his hand, all this despite bystanders telling him he had the wrong guy.


An Altoona PA police officer has resigned while waiting for his disciplinary hearing for a bar brawl where he and a fellow off-duty officer were accused of assaulting two men. He’s the fourth officer to lose his job over the incident, two other on-duty cops who responded to the incident were also caught up in it.


Maricopa County AZ sheriff Arpaio is the subject of yet another lawsuit related to his alleged efforts to use his office for political retaliation against county officials, six of which have already filed suits against him. This suit was filed by a family of real-estate developers claiming they were wrongfully caught up in those political reprisals when the sheriff served a search warrant on them in an effort to find dirt on a county official, even though that warrant was later revoked as being, well, unwarranted.

Albany NY has settled a wrongful arrest lawsuit for $40,000 to a man who was confronted by two police officers in a case of mistaken identity based on an extremely vague description of “a tall black man in a brown T-shirt and with Afro-style haircut” then peppersprayed and reportedly struck him with a baton when he questioned why he was being detained. He was then arrested for obstruction, resisting and disorderly conduct but the charges were dismissed outright.


Two Abbotsford BC police constables are to be the subject of a public hearing over an excessive force complaint based on a YouTube video that was recorded during a 2009 arrest. Apparently the department itself ruled the use of force as justified but the BC Complaint Commission has ordered another review.

Last week The Washington Post reported that Sal Culosi's parents have reached a $2 million settlement with Fairfax County, Virginia, police Detective Deval Bullock, who shot and killed the 38-year-old optometrist during a January 2006 SWAT raid on his home. The unusual settlement reflects the outrageous facts of this case, in which an unarmed man suspected of nothing more than betting on sports was recklessly gunned down during an unnecessarily violent operation.


The SWAT team came to Culosi's house because another Fairfax County detective, David Baucum, overheard him and some friends wagering on a college football game at a bar. "To Sal, betting a few bills on the Redskins was a stress reliever, done among friends," a friend of Culosi's told me shortly after his death. "None of us single, successful professionals ever thought that betting 50 bucks or so on the Virginia/Virginia Tech football game was a crime worthy of investigation." Baucum apparently did. After overhearing the wagering, Baucum befriended Culosi. During the next several months he talked Culosi into raising the stakes of what Culosi thought were friendly wagers. Eventually Culosi and Baucum bet more than $2,000 in a single day, enough under Virginia law for police to charge Culosi with running a gambling operation. That's when they brought in the SWAT team.


On the night of January 24, 2006, Baucum called Culosi and arranged a time to drop by to collect his winnings. When Culosi, barefoot and clad in a T-shirt and jeans, stepped out of his house to meet the man he thought was a friend, the SWAT team moved in. Moments later, Bullock, who had had been on duty since 4 a.m. and hadn't slept in 17 hours, killed him. Culosi's last words: "Dude, what are you doing?"


Culosi's parents, Sal and Anita Culosi, later learned that police stopped a nurse at Fairfax Hospital, where Culosi's body was taken after the raid, from notifying them that their son, one of three children, had been shot. (The optometrist's father is also named Salvatore, shortened to Sal, although the son was named after an uncle on his mother's side—ironically, a police officer who was killed in the line of duty.) The Culosis did not hear about the raid until five hours after their son had been shot and killed, preventing the devout Catholic family from administering last rites.


In the months that followed, Baucum continued his investigation, badgering Culosi's grieving friends and relatives after pulling their names and numbers from the cell phone he was carrying and a computer taken from his home the night he was killed. Steve Gulley, Culosi's brother-in-law, told The Washington Post the following April that Baucum called him and menacingly asked, "How much are you into Sal for?" Scott Lunceford, a lifelong friend of Culosi's, told the Post Baucum called him and accused him of being a gambler. The calls, Gulley told the paper, smacked of intimidation aimed at discouraging a lawsuit.


Police departments in Northern Virginia are notoriously stingy with information, and the Culosis grew increasingly frustrated with Fairfax County Police Chief David Rohrer. The public did not even learn Bullock's name until The Washington Post's Tom Jackman reported it based on a tip from a confidential source. (The Fairfax County Police Department still has not released the name of the police officer who shot unarmed motorist David Masters in November 2009.) It took more than a year for the police department to issue its report (PDF) on Culosi's death. The report, prepared by Chief Rohrer's staff, claimed Bullock accidentally fired his gun—resulting in a direct hit that pierced Culosi's heart—after the door to Bullock's SUV recoiled and struck him in the arm as he was getting out of the vehicle. The report did at least acknowledge that Bullock inappropriately had his finger on the trigger of his weapon. It also conceded that in hindsight sending a SWAT team after an unarmed man accused of a nonviolent crime probably was a mistake, although it did not fault the department for doing so.


The Culosis were dubious. They believed Bullock mistook the cell phone their son was holding the night he was shot for a gun. They hired their own investigators, who determined, based on the department's own measurements of the crime scene, that when Bullock pulled the trigger he was away from his vehicle and much closer to Culosi than he had claimed. Using the recorded locations of shell casings, police vehicles, and Culosi's body, they produced computer animations (see below) showing that the incident could not have happened in the manner described by Chief Rohrer's report.


Bullock was suspended for three weeks without pay, a paltry punishment given that he killed an unarmed man. Fairfax County Commonwealth's Attorney Robert Horan announced in March 2006 that he would not be filing criminal charges against Bullock. That was not surprising. Horan, who retired in 2008, had never brought criminal charges against a police officer in his 40 years on the job. Horan described the shooting as an accident. Yet the same month that Bullock killed Culosi, a 19-year-old man in neighboring Prince William County was charged with involuntary manslaughter after a gun he was showing to a friend accidentally discharged and killed the friend. And just a week before Horan cleared Bullock, a youth in Chesapeake, Virginia, was convicted on the same charge for accidentally firing a gun from the backseat of a car, killing the driver.


Bullock's colleagues on the police force nevertheless criticized what they called an excessively harsh punishment. Officer Marshall Thielen, president of the Fairfax County police officers union, told The Washington Post the punishment "may be politically motivated because of all the media attention." Union attorney Edward J. Nuttall told the paper that the suspension was "way off the charts" and that an oral or written reprimand would have been more appropriate.


Shortly after the release of Rohrer's report, Sal and Anita Culosi filed a federal lawsuit against Bullock, Rohrer, and Fairfax County, charging that Bullock had violated Culosi's civil rights and that Rohrer and Fairfax County were negligent in training and had implemented bad policies that resulted in Culosi's death. The courts eventually removed Rohrer and Fairfax County from the lawsuit—a tough blow because the Culosis told me one of their main goals was to change the way Fairfax County uses its SWAT team. They could not comprehend why an optometrist with no criminal record who was accused of gambling on football games would merit a SWAT team. According to Rohrer's report, 46 percent of all search warrants in the county are served with SWAT teams. (A department spokesperson said shortly after the shooting that SWAT teams were used to serve all of the county’s warrants.) The removal of Rohrer and Fairfax County from the suit left only Bullock, although all of his legal fees and any judgment against him would be paid by Fairfax County and therefore by taxpayers.


The same year Fairfax County taxpayers paid for the five-month-long investigation into Sal Culosi’s casual wagering, Virginia's government spent $20 million promoting the state lottery. In March 2006, two months after its ridiculous gambling investigation resulted in the death of an unarmed man, the Fairfax County Police Department issued a press release (no longer available on the department's website) warning residents not to participate in office betting pools tied to the NCAA men's basketball tournament. The title: "Illegal Gambling Not Worth the Risk."


In a heartbreaking entry on a website she set up for her son, Anita Culosi addressed him directly last week:


I'll beg your forgiveness Son…because I am not able…to go the distance. They call it…settlement. I call it something else…and because of that…my heart…is not settled…and my hope for justice…and my promise to you…have both been compromised...I believe in my heart that we would have won in court but I was told to consider the risk of that not happening...Our family has already been through almost 5 years of pain, frustration, disappointments, and stress...and there was the opinion that even if we won the county would appeal and that would mean a few more years and resources fighting what could still be a losing battle.


Anita Culosi's grief and disappointment are certainly understandable, but governments don't offer $2 million settlements every day. The offer came just as the trial was set to begin and just days after U.S. District Judge Leonie M. Brinkema ruled that the Culosis could show the computer animations produced by their investigators to the jury. While a jury verdict against Bullock might have given the Culosis the satisfaction of having fellow Fairfax County residents acknowledge the outrage done to their son, a $2 million settlement amounts to an admission of guilt, no matter how county officials try to spin it, because winning a lawsuit against a police officer is extremely difficult.


Shortly after Sal Culosi's death, his family started a blog in his memory called "Justice for Sal." After five years of battling stubborn public officials, an obfuscatory police bureaucracy, and a legal system designed to make it as difficult as possible to hold the government accountable, Sal and Anita Culosi should finally allow themselves to exhale. As much as anyone can in a case like this, they have found the justice they've been seeking.

The man who filmed filed the suit alleging that after he filmed a cop trying to stop a cyclist by kicking his wheel thatcops tackled and beat him, then stomped on his camera in an attempt to destroy the video. He then claims they filed several false charges against him to further the cover-up.



Des Moines County IA and Burlington IA have settled a lawsuit for $75,000 to a man claiming he was assaulted by the deputy then wrongfully arrested by thecop at the request of the deputy to cover up for the assault.


Five West Haven CT cops have been named in a lawsuit alleging they wrongfully entered a home without permission or a warrant then used excessive force while making racist comments to Hispanics at a house party. This is the second suit filed against that department claiming racial discrimination against Hispanics within the last year.


Petersburg VA has settled two lawsuits for $779,999 to the families of two teens, one who died and another who was badly injured as the result of a high-speed chase spurred by a shoplifting complaint. The settlement overturns a $2,000,000 judgment against the city that was being contested due to allegations of jury misconduct.


A St Louis MO cop has settled a lawsuit for an undisclosed sum to a boy who was 15 when thecop allegedly beat and choked him inside a charter school in front of a security guard. Thecop was off-duty but in uniform at the time while he was visiting a teacher he had a relationship with. The school settled suit with the boy for $145,000 in May of last year.

The police chief of Gregory TX was arrested on criminal mischief and trespass charges on allegations that he, his wife, and a third person vandalized a car, though specifics weren’t available at this time.



The now-former police chief of Princeton NJ was able to receive pretrial diversion in a deal on charges related to his trading a city-owned M-16 rifle for a number of M-1 rifles, some which he kept for himself.


A Clay County FL sheriff’s sergeant has been fired after charged with grand theft on allegations that he received over $2,000 in payment for off-duty security work he never even showed up for.


The police chief of Simmesport LA and two of his part-time cops have been arrested along with five other people on a number of charges that include malfeasance in office, arson, and theft on allegations that the chief had one of his police cruisers torched so the department wouldn’t have to pay to replace it and that all of them participated in the theft of property from a former church.

A Cobb County GA deputy has pled guilty to 2nd degree homicide by vessel, tampering with evidence, violating the oath of a cop, and 3 counts of making false statements for his role in the drowning death of a fellow deputy who went overboard after the boat he was driving while under the influence hit a pylon. The additional charges related to his attempts to cover up the incident.

Assault

A New Orleans LA cop is under investigation on allegations that he repeatedly tasered a in front of his two young children during a traffic stop then intentionally burned him with the taser wire by wrapping it around his wrists. Not only did his children witness the incident, but so did a third-party witness who lived nearby.



Naperville IL has settled a lawsuit for $21,000 to a man claiming cops hurled racial epithets at him before needlessly unleashing a police dog on him that shredded his clothes and bit him used racial epithets before needlessly unleashing K9 on him while he was handcuffed, all over a verbal dispute he had with a man he claimed had accosted his wife though police claim he assaulted a bouncer, even though the bouncer never persued charges.


Salisbury NC has settled a lawsuit for an unspecified sum that was filed against a cop who was allegedly caught on his own dashcam lifting a man over his head and body slamming him on the pavement, breaking his collarbone.

The San Diego CA police dept and the San Diego County sheriff’s office are the subject of a lawsuit filed by a woman claiming that both departments invited 3 different news crews to come with them as they raided her home and arrested her on allegations that she had been taking advantage of the elderly and disabled… all while the actual suspect was already in jail and despite the fact she didn’t match the description of the suspect who was captured on video. Meanwhile her name, face and images of the raid was on the television for a week even though she did nothing wrong.



Spring Valley NY police and US DEA agents are accused of conducting a wrong door raid on a family’s home, threatening them and their teen daughter at gunpoint during a massive drug raid operation targeting several homes for marijuana dealing. They claimcops never told them why they were there and the stress caused their daughter to suffer an asthma attack that required hospital treatment. After the mistaken raid, the father said he sawcops amass at a house nearby and raid that home, but still wouldn’t answer why they raided his home, telling him he would hear about it on the news tomorrow.

A Orlando FL cop has been found liable in a civil suit filed by a woman who claims the cop shoved her down a set of stairs at a club on video. The cop claims she tripped and fell because she was drunk but the jury apparently disagreed, even though they only awarded her $4,600 in damages and did not find in her favor on allegations of false arrest.

A Bunn NC cop has been indicted on taking indecent liberties with a minor charges after he was fired as the result of an internal investigation into those allegations, though police are refusing to specify what those allegations are.



A Richmond VA deputy has been fired after his home was searched and he was arrested on possession of child pornography charges.


A Columbus OH cop has been suspended while he’s the subject of a criminal investigation into allegations that he had a sexual relationship with a 15-year-old girl which became apparent when police were investigating a burglary at thecop’s home.


A Troy NY cop has been arrested on charges including forcible touching and sexual abuse involving a 19-year-old girl that occurred at a store where thecop worked an off-duty security job.


An unspecified number of Denver CO cops are the subject of a lawsuit alleging that they forced their way into a family’s home then used excessive force on a man and two of his teen sons before arresting them on false charges of resisting arrest and assaulting ancop… even though the raid didn’t turn up any evidence of criminal activity. The charges were dismissed but the department is insisting theircops didn’t do anything wrong.


A Gainesville FL cop has been disciplined with a reprimand for unleashing his police dog on a 10-year-old boy on a bicycle, who’s legs were bitten, before thecop confirmed that an actual crime had occurred and that the boy matched the description of a suspect in the robbery call that he was responding to… it ended up that the boy wasn’t involved in any criminal activity.


A Seattle WA cop is the subject of renewed calls for federal intervention into the department over an alleged off-duty road rage incident where the cop pulled his gun on a 19-year-old man. Part of the complaint made by two former US Attorneys are that at least one detective attempted to cover up for that cop by shopping for charges against his victim. Apparently the detective tried to convince county prosecutors to charge the man with assaulting ancop and, when they refused, he tried to convince the city attorney to file misdemeanor charges against the man, all while ignoring and hiding testimony from witnesses claiming that thecop was the aggressor. The department’s Office of Professional Accountability is also being implicated for not properly investigating the allegations during an internal review and the chief for using the resultant flawed investigation to keep records sealed.

A Stover MO cop was fired after he was arrested by a state trooper on drunk driving charges when he rear-ended a pregnant woman’s car.



An Aurora CO cop has been fired for unspecified reasons after he was convicted on a DUI charge last June and was able to have other DUI charge dismissed in September in a plea to a reduced charge.

A now former Minneapolis MN cop has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for a series of armed robberies he performed in three different cities. That sentence is to be served concurrently with an 8 year sentence on federal bank robbery charges and a 10 year sentenced for other armed robberies he performed in an adjacent county.

Fairfax County VA has settled a lawsuit for $2,000,000

Fairfax County VA has settled a lawsuit for $2,000,000 to the family of man who was fatally shot by a SWAT team officer while unarmed during a raid that was heavily criticized because it was for the non-violent crime of taking bets on football games. The officer claimed the shot was accidental when he hit his arm on his car door which caused his finger to slip into the trigger guard and squeeze the trigger but forensic evidence prepared by the family’s lawyer contradicted that claim.

Three Denver CO police officers are the subject of a lawsuit alleging they brutally beat a 19-year-old man during a traffic stop because he refused to let them search his trunk without a warrant. The suit alleges officers beat him for several minutes with radios, batons, and flashlights and that one of the officers was also involved in the highly publicized DeHerrera beating that was captured on video. The man, shown in the photo above, also claims that after the beating one officer told him “Where’s that warrant now, you fucking nigger?” and that officers then conspired to falsely charge him to cover for the beating, charges which later fell apart and were dismissed.

Martinsville VA and Taser Inc are being sued by the mother of a 17-year-old boy who was unarmed when a Martinsville officer shot him in the chest with a taser which was determined to have caused his death in the absence of any other possible contributing factors.



An unspecified number of Portland OR cops and US Marshals are being sued by a man who was tackled while on his knees and complying with commands by officers who detained him at gunpoint. The suit then alleges officers jumped on him, tasered him twice, then released a police dog on him which attacked him so severely he required two operations and still suffers nerve damage from the multiple bite wounds. It turned out that the man police attacked was completely innocent, had no record, and was simply walking home from the grocery store at the time. Police claim he was injured for not complying.


A Sarasota County FL deputy has been fired for using excessive force, inappropriate language, and for conduct unbecoming when he arrested a 17-year-old girl on a bus after she was accused of attacking someone. The incident was caught on video, shown above, and while the officer claimed he felt justified using force because it was a battery call, other witnesses on the bus complained it was excessive and an internal investigation confirmed it.


An unspecified number of Cleveland OH cops are under investigation on allegations, made by other officers, that they used excessive force when they beat a suspect after a car chase that was captured on video from a police helicopter. Officers who have reviewed the tape confirm it appeared egregious but police are refusing to release the video until their investigation is complete. Other officers may also be under investigation for watching the beating but not reporting it or stopping it.


A now-former Freemansburg PA cop is the subject of a lawsuit claiming the officer unnecessarily forced a family off the road and arrested the driver at gunpoint. The officer then cited the driver for an unspecified traffic violation and let him go. The department is denying the claims but also says the officer was going through a problematic period of time in his life, had already been arrested and disciplined over multiple misconduct incidents before this incident, and was fired shortly afterward.


A Columbus IN cop has been sentenced to probation in a plea deal for falsely reporting that drugs that were found on a jail’s intake area floor belonged to a female detainee. The deal dropped several other felony charges and the judge gave the officer a misdemeanor sentence for the remaining felony charge of false reporting.


An unspecified number of Guelph ON cops are under investigation after they prematurely declared a woman dead and refused to allow paramedics or firefighters access to the woman until an investigator taking video of the body noticed it twitching. The woman survived but the chief is demanding answers because he says it’s not the job of officers to declare deaths unless a person is well beyond obviously dead due to decay or dismemberment for just such a reason.


The police chief of Windermere FL has been arrested on multiple charges on allegations that he used his position to shield his friend from a criminal investigation into child molestation allegations and lied in order to do it.


An Avon Park FL cop has been charged for falsifying documents and omitting information during an attempted homicide investigation in an alleged attempt to shield his ex-girlfirend who was involved in the incident.


A Center TX police detective has been charged with perjury over his grand jury testimony about a fight between two Shelby County deputies.


A Flagler County FL deputy has been arrested on allegations that he stole several thousands of dollars in cash from evidence and replaced the money with paper towels in an attempt to cover it up.


A Palos Verdes Estates CA cop has been sentenced to probation and fines in a plea deal for embezzling money from his police union.


A Toledo OH cop has been sentenced to 6 months of electronic detention and probation after accepting a plea deal to theft in office charges for timesheet fraud.


A Central SC cop has been suspended after he was arrested on a domestic violence charge on allegations that he threw a crucifix at his wife then grabbed her by the neck and threw her down on a couch.


Two Beaumont TX cops have resigned after they pled guilty to records tampering charges that were related to a drug bust.


A US Border Patrol agent has been arrested for harboring illegal immigrants and drugs in his home. One of those immigrants was his father who had been deported previously on drug charges and was found during a SWAT raid on his home.


A New York State trooper has had his drivers license suspended for six months after pleading guilty to drunk driving charges and for leaving scene of an accident. However it’s unclear if he’ll be fired since he was briefly suspended without pay but is now back on duty.


A Massilon OH cop has been sentenced to 20 hours of community service, a $400 fine, had his license suspended for six months and must put special yellow plates on his car to warn others that he’s a convicted drunk driver after he was arrested with a .28 BAC, which is 3x the limit, when he crashed into a utility pole. He’ll be allowed to drive for work after 15 days though.


And finally, a Pineland TX cop has been arrested on drunk driving charges after police responded to a call from an EconoLodge complaining that the officer was taking food from their breakfast buffet without permission and caught him speeding away from the motel.

Pleasantville NY police and Mount Pleasant NY police are being sued by the family of a Pace University student and football player who was shot to death by police in October in a questionable incident that is still under investigation and a cloud of controversy.


A California Highway Patrol officer has been arrested for the shooting death of her husband 2 years ago. She originally claimed it was done in self-defense but family and friends of her husband universally described him as being non-violent but that she had severe drinking issues. Police also found her account questionable and their investigation culminated in her eventual arrest on allegations it was an intentional act of homicide.


A West Bloomfield MI police detective has cost that town $1,800,000 in a wrongful imprisonment/wrongful prosecution lawsuit settlement made to a family who’s father was jailed for 80 days on false rape charges along with their mother who was also briefly jailed while their two autistic children were sent to separate foster homes. The suit against the police claimed the detective essentially forced a highly questionable confession from the family’s autistic son in a horrifying videotaped interrogation and that the initial allegation was dragged from their severely autistic daughter through highly questionable methods that were almost nothing more than a Ouija board. Their suit is still in progress against county prosecutors, children’s services, and the school district for their roles in this disturbing case. Two Fresno CA cops’ actions have resulted in a $75,000 settlement made to a homeless man who was shown on amateur video being beaten while arrested in a public park.


A Selma AL cop has been arrested on 2nd degree rape charges involving a person between the ages of 12 to 16-years-old that came about after an investigation by local and state police. Further details have not yet been released about the case.


A Louisville KY cop has been suspended without pay for 30 days as disciplinary action for violating policy when he caused a fatal accident while doing 80mph in a 45mph zone while on-duty. The officer and his lawyer are fighting the discipline saying it’s too harsh while the family says it’s not enough for causing the death of their loved one, especially since the police chief wanted to fire him.


Another Louisville KY cop is on paid leave while under investigation and facing criminal charges after he allegedly started swearing at a mentally challenged female customer inside a McDonalds then escalating a confrontation with a woman who came to her defense until he finally pulled a gun and told the women “what are you bitches going to do now?” Patrons called 911 at this point and the officer fled. The officer, of course, insists he has a different version of events to tell, but hasn’t shared them yet.


An RCMP staff sergeant has been charged with perjury over his testimony as a blood-splatter expert during a 2009 murder trial that occured shortly before he retired.


A Trenton NJ cop has been arrested for simple assault and kidnapping over an alleged domestic dispute he had with his girlfriend.

A now-former Parma OH police sergeant has pled guilty to record tampering and falsification charges for conspiring with a doctor to hide the fact that he was color blind during his hiring process. The officer in question had written articles for police newsletters including one entitled “Police Ethics is Not an Oxymoron.”


A Carmel IN cop has been suspended while under investigation on allegations he hit on women that he pulled over and even followed one home after a traffic stop.


A study of Texas school cops has revealed that there have been at least 1,000 elementary students, some as young as 6-years-old, who were arrested on misdemeanor charges for garden variety school disciplinary issues like acting out in class instead of being disciplined through the usual principal office visits, detentions, or what have you. The study also indicated that more arrests occurred in schools with large minority populations and where the number of officers has been increasing.


A Tucson AZ police lieutenant has been sentenced to probation and must pay about $17,000 in restitution for his fraudulent use of a police union credit account.


A Philadelphia PA cop has been arrested on multiple charges after an investigation into allegations that he was spotted drinking at a bar while on duty then driving away in his police cruiser.


A Sault Ste Marie MI cop has been sentenced to probation and must pay $1350 in fines and fees after pleading guilty to a .17 BAC DUI charge.


A Racine WI police investigator has been cited for DUI after he apparently crashed into a snow plow that was parked in a driveway while off-duty in his personal car.

A Worcester MA cop is the subject of a lawsuit filed by a woman from Chicago, with the help of the ACLU, who claims that the officer used excessive force when he injured he by throwing her to the ground and sat on her for several minutes because she objected to how he was treating her friend during a traffic stop. The suit also claims that the officer told another officer who arrived on the scene later that she was being arrested for “yapping about her rights.” She was later found not guilty of disorderly conduct but was convicted for resisting arrest, which she is also appealing since there was no basis for the arrest.


A Jennings MO cop has resigned after an internal investigation determined that he violated policy and was unjustified in shooting at a fleeing car that had an infant in the back seat because the car presented no danger to himself or others at the time.


A Newark NJ police sergeant has pled guilty to obstructing an investigation into allegations that he had sex with minors at his home and the police station he worked out of by trying to coach one of the alleged victims in his testimony.


An Uplands Park MO cop has pled guilty to a conspiracy to deprive rights charge for helping a fellow officer shake down women for money and property during traffic stops and alleged prostitutes for money and sex on about 10-15 occasions. The other officer previously agreed to a plea deal dropping 10 of the 19 felony charges against him which included allegations that he forcibly sexually assaulted some of the women he shook down, sometimes at gunpoint. However, it appears as though that officer is trying to back out of that plea deal, insisting that, somehow, the women obtained his DNA through means other than him sexually assaulting them.


A Sanford FL cop won’t face any disciplinary action but four officers will be required to attend additional training after a surveillance video contradicted the officers account of an incident where he approached a car full of people with his gun drawn at a gas station then grabbed onto its door handle as it drove off. The review determined the actions were unsafe and the attempted murder charge he attempted to file against the driver were unfounded. Oddly, the investigation apparently lost a witness statement that also contradicted the officer’s account of what happened.


A North Las Vegas NV cop has been sentenced to pay a $250 fine and perform 40 hours of community service in a plea deal to an obstruction charge for lying about how his badge stopped a bullet in a fake shooting incident where he made up a story about chasing an armed suspect. An investigation determined his badge was damaged by a screwdriver instead.


An Erie County OH sheriff’s lieutenant was given a 5-day suspension without pay for refusing to respond to a call made by a woman who was left injured and bleeding after being raped. He instead sent a less-experienced deputy to answer the call while he decided to sit and relieve a dispatcher instead.


The Gallatin TN police department may lose their access rights to a national police database after their police chief was not disciplined when a state investigation found that he had abused his access to that database. City officials are defiantly standing behind the chief and, while state officials say they won’t criminally charge him, they say something has to be done on an administrative level about what happened.


A Cottonwood Heights UT cop who once ran for sheriff and congress has been arrested on 2 felony misuse of public funds charges on allegations that he used a city gas card to fuel his personal vehicles.


A Harahan LA police patrol commander has resigned and another officer has been suspended while the FBI investigates allegations that they may have misused up to $80,000 in federal grants.


A Cincinnati OH cop and his girlfriend received suspended jail sentences and probation for torching their own car in order to get out of making payments on what they owed for the vehicle.


A Roswell NM cop has been arrested on domestic violence charges for allegedly beating & kicking her cop husband then admitting to it when she turned herself in.


A Somerset OH aux cop who apparently was fully certified and had full arrest powers, (an important distinction for us since we only track cases involving sworn or certified officers), has been charged with aggravated drug trafficking after a sting operation caught him buying “bulk” amounts of Oxycodone and transporting those drugs from Florida to Ohio for sale to his customers.


A Florida A&M University FL cop has pled guilty to conspiring to distribute marijuana and for making false statements to federal investigators who were looking into those allegations.


A Spokane County WA deputy has been sentenced to 15 days of home detention for driving while intoxicated. He must also use an ignition interlock device in order to drive but the sheriff has said he is ordering an exception to that court order so he can drive without one at work, but swears it’s the last time he’s making such an exemption for deputies caught driving drunk.


A Modesto CA cop has been sentenced to 7 days in jail after pleading guilty to DUI and having an open container in his jeep when he crashed it down an embankment while off-duty.


An Alexandria VA cop has been arrested on DUI charges after crashing his unmarked cruiser into a pole while off-duty.


And finally, a Youngsville LA assistant police chief has been arrested on drunk driving charges after he got behind the wheel of a stuck “party trolly” while a tow truck was trying to get it unstuck. Apparently, he mistakenly put it in gear and dragged the tow truck onto a road where he crashed into the tow truck and a utility pole… and yes, I wish there was video of this.

Baltimore MD police are being accused of overreacting and indiscriminately firing into crowd after an undercover officer allegedly pulled his firearm during an altercation that some say started when he was confronted for being rough with an unidentified woman. The resulting gunfire killed the undercover officer and another person while leaving three women and another officer wounded. So far, police can’t say that anyone other than the police opened fire.



Eight Springfield MA cops are the subject of a lawsuit alleging that they intentionally broke a man’s ankle while arresting him on drunk and disorderly charges then forced him to walk on it while taunting him and denying him medical attention. Two of the officers were ultimately disciplined over the incident with three days off without pay.


The Davidson County TN sheriff’s office is the subject of a lawsuit filed by a US citizen who was mistakenly kept in jail on a immigration hold twice despite offering ID, a valid Social Security number and even his original birth certificate as proof he was born in the US. The suit, interestingly enough, challenges the sheriff’s right to enforce federal immigration laws due to the wording in the Nashville city’s charter and state laws which limit that sheriff’s department’s law enforcement role.


A Cheyenne WY cop has been charged with aggravated assault with a weapon and false imprisonment on allegations that he kicked and handcuffed his wife then threatened her and their infant with his gun during a domestic dispute.


A Sacramento CA cop has resigned as part of a deal that will dismiss felony charges against him for brandishing a weapon during an argument with his girlfriend.


A Snohomish County WA deputy has been arrested on felony domestic violence changes in an unspecified incident and no details released include what the relationship was with the person he allegedly assaulted.


The police chief of Hubbard OH has been placed on paid leave for second time in his career while he is under investigation over various allegations including insubordination, misuse of city property and “jeopardizing the health of the police department”. However, the specifics aren’t being released and some of what’s going on seems a little suspect so I’m not sure about adding this one to the database yet, we’ll see how it unfolds.

A snowplow driver asked if he needed help and reported his license plate when he thought the man seemed drunk. Police then tracked him to his dad’s house where he lives.
