PATERSON
— A former city auxiliary police officer who fled the scene of a fatal crash
involving a motorcyclist he and his partner were pursuing was sentenced Friday
to five years in prison, The Record reported.
Juan
Martinez, 33, previously pleaded guilty to official misconduct for the crash
that killed Randolph Waddy, 31, of Garfield in April 2012, the newspaper
reported.
As
previously reported on NJ.com, Martinez and Jonathan Lopez were accused of
riding in an emergency vehicle when they attempted to stop Waddy's motorcycle despite not being authorized to conduct
traffic stops.
Auxiliary
police officers aren't armed and they typically handle duties such as crowd
control or traffic detours.
Waddy sped up, lost control of his motorcycle
and crashed into the back of a parked car.
The two auxiliary police officers then failed
to stop at Waddy's crash and didn't tell their supervisors or police,
authorities have said.
Waddy's
family later filed suit against the city and its police department following
his death.
